Amman: The Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) and UN Women Jordan convened a meeting to strategize the implementation of Jordan's second National Action Plan (NAP) on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which focuses on Women, Peace, and Security. The discussions aimed at bolstering the engagement of civil society in executing initiatives under the plan.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting organized three discussion groups to pinpoint priorities and identify capacity-building requirements that would empower civil society institutions. JNCW Secretary-General Maha Ali emphasized the meeting's purpose of establishing training priorities for members and enhancing collaboration between the civil society forum and the commission. The initiative seeks to broaden the involvement of institutions in executing activities that advance women's roles in decision-making, crisis response, climate change adaptation, and emergency management.
Ali highlighted the importance of ensuring women's access to social protection and essential services. She also underscored the necessity of engaging schools, media, community leaders, and youth to foster gender equality and prevent violence, discrimination, and violent extremism. She pointed out that tracking civil society achievements is crucial for clarifying their national role and facilitating annual progress evaluations.
UN Women Country Representative in Jordan, Nicolas Burniat, expressed approval for the diverse range of participating civil society organizations. He noted that this diversity enhances joint efforts and allows for interventions tailored to community needs, ultimately supporting the NAP's implementation and benefiting Jordan at large.
Earlier this year, the JNCW restructured the civil society forum based on reference terms sanctioned by the Ministerial Committee for Women's Empowerment. The forum now comprises 61 members dedicated to improving coordination with the commission and amplifying civil society's contribution to the plan's objectives.
