Amman: Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) President Khalil Haj Tawfiq met with Mexican Ambassador Jacob Prado Gonzalez to discuss expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation between their countries.
According to Jordan News Agency, Tawfiq highlighted that Jordan's exports to Mexico amounted to JD 17 million last year, while imports stood at JD 55 million. He emphasized the potential to increase and diversify Jordanian exports. Tawfiq advocated for a free trade agreement to enhance trade exchange, boost investment flows, and open new markets for both countries.
During the meeting held at the JCC headquarters, Tawfiq underscored the importance of activating the 2021 memorandum of understanding between the JCC and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment, and Technology. This step aims to strengthen private-sector engagement and initiate cooperation initiatives serving mutual economic interests.
He proposed stronger communication with Mexican chambers of commerce and economic institutions, suggesting a virtual meeting between JCC and its Mexican counterpart to identify key sectors for collaboration. These sectors include tourism, information technology, transport equipment, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food industries, and chemical industries.
Tawfiq also suggested hosting a Mexican economic and trade delegation in Jordan to explore investment opportunities and the Kingdom's potential as a gateway to Arab and regional markets. He advocated for creating an Arab-Mexican chamber of commerce to facilitate communication between business communities and identify promising opportunities.
Tawfiq highlighted Jordan's attractive investment environment and strategic location, emphasizing the importance of exchanging trade delegations and organizing joint business meetings. He pointed out promising export opportunities in chemical industries, fertilizers, textiles, plastic products, and engineering industries, calling for stronger cooperation in technology, food industries, logistics, and investment.
Ambassador Gonzalez affirmed Mexico's commitment to strengthening economic ties with Jordan and fostering collaboration between the business communities. He emphasized the importance of joint initiatives in strategic sectors such as trade, services, agriculture, information technology, transport, and tourism.
Gonzalez expressed interest in the proposals discussed and assured the embassy's readiness to support a joint action program. This program aims to enhance communication with chambers of commerce, explore new cooperation areas, and expand bilateral trade. He invited JCC and Jordanian businesspeople to visit Mexico to explore economic and investment opportunities and build sustainable private-sector partnerships.
