Istanbul: Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Sami Smeirat took part in the 40th ministerial session of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul. The session focused on advancing economic issues such as inter-trade, financial cooperation, transportation, tourism, agriculture, and poverty alleviation among member states. According to Jordan News Agency, a dedicated ministerial session centered on "digital transformation in payment systems in OIC member states," where ministers exchanged experiences in developing digital payment systems. In his address, Smeirat underscored the need for joint efforts to foster digital innovation and implement policies that accelerate digital transformation across OIC countries. He highlighted Jordan's commitment to expanding its digital infrastructure as part of the Kingdom's economic modernization vision, championed by King Abdullah II, which aims to build a robust d igital economy, drive efficiency, and contribute to sustainable growth. Smeirat outlined Jordan's advancements in digital payments, noting the establishment of the instant payments system in 2014 and the electronic billing system, which currently supports over 560 billers. These initiatives have simplified government financial services and facilitated greater access to digital services, he said. He reiterated Jordan's dedication to enhancing financial inclusion and supporting financial technology innovation through the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (2023-2028), which aims to create a comprehensive framework for advancing financial technology in the country. Smeirat also called on OIC member states to strengthen cooperation in addressing common challenges in digital payment transformation by sharing expertise and supporting research in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.
