Amman: The Coordinating Committee of Jordanian Political Parties, comprising Azm, National Charter, Jordanian National Union, Reform, and Mubadara, organized a significant national event at the Hussein Cultural Palace in Amman to mark the 57th anniversary of the arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque.
According to Jordan News Agency, the event saw attendance from several political party secretaries-general, leaders, and representatives, along with Muslim and Christian religious figures. Participants highlighted the importance of commemorating the 1969 arson attack as a national, Arab, and religious occasion, emphasizing Jerusalem's centrality and its place in Jordanian, Arab, Islamic, and Christian consciousness. They rejected attempts to alter the city's historic and civilizational identity and its legal status.
The attendees underscored Jordan's longstanding role in safeguarding Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, noting that the Hashemite custodianship represents a continuous historic responsibility toward the holy city. This custodianship has been reinforced under His Majesty King Abdullah II, who emphasizes the need to maintain Jerusalem's existing historic and legal status quo.
Suleiman Al-Saud, Head of the Lower House Palestine Committee, remarked on Jerusalem's representation of identity, history, and an inalienable right. He pointed to ongoing Israeli attacks, Judaization policies, and efforts to change the city's landmarks, stressing the Palestinian people's established and just rights to their land and holy sites. Al-Saud also called for a definitive international stance to halt such practices, referencing attacks in Gaza and the West Bank.
Preacher Murad Al-Rifai highlighted Al-Aqsa Mosque's religious significance, warning against normalizing repeated attacks on the site. He emphasized the mosque's deep connection to Muslims and its importance within Islamic faith. Father Nabil Haddad stated that Jerusalem and its holy sites are a trust, underscoring the Hashemite custodianship's role in preserving their identity.
Zaid Nafaa, Azm Party Secretary-General and Political Bureau Chairman, affirmed the party's steadfast stance on Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause, stressing the importance of continued political and party involvement in defending holy sites and Palestinian rights.
Various political party secretaries-general and representatives reiterated Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause's centrality within Jordanian consciousness. They expressed categorical rejection of ongoing Israeli attacks and attempts to alter the city's identity, erase historic landmarks, or undermine its Muslim and Christian holy sites. They stressed Jordan's ongoing role, under King Abdullah II, in defending Jerusalem and its holy sites from attempts to alter their character and Judaize the city.
The participants reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international legitimacy resolutions and the two-state solution. They emphasized that Jerusalem remains a central issue in Jordanian consciousness that cannot be overlooked, asserting that Jordan will persist in its historic and political role in defending the holy city, preserving its identity, and supporting its residents' steadfastness.
They lauded Jordan's efforts to mobilize Arab and international positions to halt Israeli violations and called for increased political and diplomatic efforts to protect Jerusalem and its holy sites, preventing unilateral measures aimed at changing the city's character. They stressed that preserving Jerusalem and its holy sites is a shared Arab, Muslim, and Christian responsibility, and supporting Palestinian steadfastness is crucial to confronting attempts to impose a new reality on the ground and achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
