Amman: A team of students from the Data Science Department at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) won first place in the "Quantum Computing Hackathon" organized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The competition was held in cooperation with the Quantum Computing Foundation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and IBM, with wide participation from researchers, students, and innovators.
According to Jordan News Agency, the hackathon had two activities, as one was held in person in Alexandria and the other was online. The university team ranked 1st in the online edition in the quantum machine learning contests.
In a Wednesday statement, PSUT President, Dr. Wejdan Abu-Elhaija, praised the students' achievement, which reflects their "determination, excellence, and true academic and intellectual capabilities." Abu-Elhaija added that the students' first-time participation and victory in quantum computing demonstrate their ability to "innovate, keep pace with global computing trends and integrate them into data science and artificial intelligence."
In turn, Dr. Serin Atiani, the "supervisor of the winning team," expressed pride in the PSUT students' perseverance in learning and applying quantum computing concepts, as well as AI models. The team presented machine learning models using quantum computing technology to provide solutions in the healthcare sector, including predicting Parkinson's disease.
