Jordanian Women’s Political Presence Shows ‘Tangible’ Progress in Several Indicators: Minister

Amman: Minister of Social Development and Head of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Women's Empowerment, Wafaa Bani Mustafa, highlighted the potential for Jordanian women to convert their representation into a significant presence in policymaking and decision-making across various levels, including parliamentary, political, partisan, local council, and public institutions.

According to Jordan News Agency, Bani Mustafa emphasized that women's involvement brings with it a range of experiences, perspectives, and inclusive decision-making that impacts the lives of citizens. Her comments were made during a panel discussion organized by the Mubadara (Initiative) Party at the Hussein Cultural Center in Amman. The event, titled "Women in Political Parties in Jordan: Challenges and Creating Opportunities," aimed to discuss the current state and future prospects of women in political spheres.

The minister remarked that the theme of the discussion symbolizes a commitment to fostering balanced political participation within society. She noted that Jordan is experiencing progress in various areas concerning women's participation in public life, with political engagement being a central component of empowerment.

Bani Mustafa also pointed out several legislative changes that have facilitated women's involvement in political parties and parliament. Amendments to the Political Parties and Elections Laws have been instrumental in this regard. She highlighted that the current Jordanian parliament has seen women's representation rise to 19.6%, the highest in the history of successive Jordanian parliaments, demonstrating progress in strengthening women's roles in governance.

Under the Political Parties Law, a requirement mandates that at least 20% of the founders of any new political party must be women. This measure is designed to ensure women's access to leadership positions and resources within parties.

Bani Mustafa called on political parties, institutions, and civil society organizations to collaborate in creating defined political programs that support women's participation, training, and empowerment. She stressed the importance of women's participation for achieving sustainable development and a balanced society, noting that the panel discussion contributes to setting a vision and aspirations for the future.
