Amman: Jordan's food supplies are "very secure and ample," exceeding the required levels for essential commodities, including wheat and barley, said Spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yanal Barmawi on Monday.

According to Jordan News Agency, Barmawi confirmed that supply chains are functioning normally and are continuously monitored to ensure the availability of various goods, particularly food products imported from multiple sources alongside local production. He reassured Jordanians that food supplies are abundant, stores are well-stocked, and prices remain stable.

Barmawi highlighted that the ministry is closely monitoring potential impacts on foreign trade and maritime shipping routes, especially through Bab al-Mandab and other regional ports, due to recent military tensions between Iran and Israel. He clarified that most of Jordan's imports and exports occur via Bab al-Mandab, with the Strait of Hormuz not being a primary route.

To mitigate potential disruptions, the ministry prepared several contingency plans, including alternative export options through ports such as Tartous and Latakia in Syria, as well as transit routes through Syrian territory to Eastern European countries, Turkey, and Russia.

He noted that the government has actively addressed challenges arising from various global crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Israeli conflict in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine war, and broader geopolitical tensions. Measures have been implemented to regulate supply chains, preserve food stocks, and reduce the impact of rising shipping costs on the local market.

Barmawi emphasised ongoing collaboration with the commercial and industrial sectors to maintain and enhance food reserves and to swiftly respond to any emergency circumstances.
