Beirut: Lebanon's new Army Commander, General Rodolph Haykal, announced that the military is actively communicating with Syrian authorities to enhance the control of the northern and eastern borders. Haykal's statement was made during an emergency meeting with senior officers at the army headquarters in Yarze, near Beirut.

According to Anadolu Agency, Haykal emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating that the coordination with Syrian authorities is aimed at serving the common interest of both Lebanon and Syria. The announcement came shortly after a planned Lebanese-Syrian meeting to discuss the fate of Syrian detainees in Lebanon and issues of border demarcation was postponed.

A government source informed Anadolu that the Syrian delegation, which was expected to include representatives from various ministries and intelligence officials, was scheduled to meet with a Lebanese ministerial committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri. However, Mitri later mentioned on social media platform X that no new date has been set for the talks.

In related developments, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam conducted an official visit to Damascus in April, meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. This visit was significant as it marked the first meeting between Lebanese and Syrian officials since al-Sharaa assumed office. The discussions during this visit addressed several critical issues, including the situation of Syrian detainees in Lebanon.

It is noteworthy that Syria's previous leader, Assad, who had been in power for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December. This event marked the end of the Baath Party regime, which had governed since 1963, and led to the formation of a new transitional administration under President Ahmad al-Sharaa in January.
