Ban nong chan: The Thai army has declared martial law in the town of Ban Nong Chan, located in Thailand's Sa Kaeo province, citing concerns over Cambodian nationals allegedly entering the area illegally and inciting unrest.
According to Anadolu Agency, the military has tasked the Burapha Task Force, a unit of the Thai First Army Area, with implementing measures aimed at maintaining peace and order. The task force is responsible for border security operations along the Thai-Cambodian border. The decision to impose martial law comes in response to recent incidents involving Cambodian citizens crossing into Thai territory, which have been viewed as a threat to national security and the local community's safety.
The military's statement outlines several prohibitions under martial law, including the possession of weapons, road blockades, unauthorized photography of military installations, and the use of sound amplification equipment without permission. Additionally, the consumption of alcohol, use of intoxicating substances, and engaging in disputes are banned within the designated areas.
Cambodian citizens have been warned of severe legal repercussions for illegal entry, damage or theft of government property, and actions that could compromise Thailand's sovereignty. These offenses carry significant penalties, including the possibility of life imprisonment or the death sentence.
The imposition of martial law follows protests earlier this week by Cambodian citizens near the Sa Kaeo border, who opposed the installation of barbed wire fencing. The Thai military has indicated that those found dismantling the wire could face up to five years in prison.
Thailand and Cambodia have a history of border tensions, notably around Cambodia's Preah Vihear province and Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province. Recent incidents, including the reported killing of a Cambodian soldier on May 28 and clashes last month resulting in several deaths, have escalated tensions. Despite these challenges, both nations agreed to a ceasefire, which remains in place. A 13-point agreement, endorsed on August 7, allows ASEAN observers to monitor the ceasefire along the contested border.
