Tripoli:Libyan Presidential Council head Mohamed al-Menfi and High Council of State chief Mohamed Takala engaged in discussions on Sunday aimed at advancing a national political settlement to enable forthcoming elections.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Presidential Council issued a statement indicating that the meeting focused on political developments and efforts to resume the political process. The discussions emphasized reaching a comprehensive national settlement and progressing toward elections.
Both leaders underscored the necessity of safeguarding the judiciary's independence, shielding it from any interference or political influences. They highlighted the judiciary as a fundamental pillar for state stability and a protector of the rule of law, rights, and freedoms. Additionally, they stressed the importance of maintaining the unity and independence of sovereign institutions and respecting their legal mandates to prevent conflicting decision-making or their use in political disputes.
In related developments, Libya's 4+4 dialogue committee recently agreed to enhance consultations with various components of the judiciary. This move aims to unify the judiciary and ensure its support for presidential and parliamentary elections. The committee, which includes representatives from both the Government of National Unity and the general command of forces in the east, has been holding UN-sponsored talks since April 2026 to break the country's political deadlock and advance the UN roadmap, particularly concerning elections and the unification of executive authority.
On August 30, the committee reached an agreement to restructure the board of the High National Elections Commission and establish a timetable for presidential and parliamentary elections within a 24-month period, under a single executive authority and unified national institutions.
