Amman: The Malaysian Embassy in Amman hosted a ceremony to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), attended by ambassadors, journalists, and other guests.
According to Jordan News Agency, Malaysian Ambassador to Jordan, Mohamad Nasri Bin Abdul Rahman, highlighted ASEAN's journey over the past 58 years, noting its growth from five founding member states to ten, with Timor-Leste set to become the 11th member. He emphasized ASEAN's strength in its continuity and commitment to its fundamental principles.
Ambassador Abdul Rahman pointed out that this commitment is reflected in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), signed by 57 countries, which demonstrates ASEAN's global recognition as a voice of wisdom and stability. He also emphasized ASEAN's influential role in global affairs and its unified stance on urgent global issues.
He specifically mentioned ASEAN foreign ministers' call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the need to hold violators of international law accountable, underlining ASEAN's proactive role in addressing international challenges.
