Amman: The International Day of Persons with Disability (IDPWD), established by the United Nations in 1992, serves as a platform to highlight issues faced by persons with disabilities and to promote their engagement in political, economic, and cultural spheres, as stated by the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR). According to Jordan News Agency, the NCHR emphasized that the 2024 theme, "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future," calls for increased awareness of the significant challenges and barriers that hinder the advancement of this community across various sectors. The NCHR stressed the necessity for advocates to address the conditions of persons with disabilities to facilitate their effective contribution towards building an integrated society and fostering humanitarian values. The NCHR commended the efforts undertaken to safeguard and advance the rights of people with disabilities. The Kingdom's Constitution and its amendments incorporate the principles of equality and non-discrimination, underscoring the protection of rights and the encouragement of participation and integration of persons with disabilities in different facets of life. Jordan's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2008 was highlighted, as it was officially published in the Official Gazette. Regarding the Social Development Law 2024, the NCHR noted that the regulation outlines the objectives of the Ministry of Social Development, which strives to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by delivering optimal protection and care services in a participatory and equitable manner. The Law aims to uphold human dignity and privacy, while also issuing several directives regulating the implementation of Jordan's Law on the Rights of People with Disabilities. In terms of policy, the Transportation Strategy (2024-2028) was launched, encompassing multiple projects designed to benefit persons with disabilities, including the Amman-Zarqa Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the Bus Rapid Transit Project connecting Sweileh and Queen Alia International Airport. The NCHR referenced initiatives to accommodate individuals with disabilities in public transportation facilities and services. The center reiterated its commitment to monitoring compliance with ratified international agreements aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, urging the adoption of its recommendations as outlined in its annual reports dedicated to this cause.
