Amsterdam: Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel has expressed support for Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing their right to determine their own future, in response to renewed calls from the United States for an American acquisition of Greenland.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, Van Weel took to US social media platform X to assert Greenland's pivotal role in Arctic security. He encouraged dialogue and cooperation among NATO allies to reinforce security in the region, emphasizing that the future of Greenland should be determined by Denmark and Greenland themselves. He also conveyed the Netherlands' unwavering support for its "Danish friends."
US President Donald Trump has consistently shown interest in acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory under Denmark, and has not dismissed the possibility of using military force to achieve this goal. Following a US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Trump reiterated his calls for acquiring Greenland to enhance US security interests.
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has responded to Trump's statements by urging him to cease issuing threats. Additionally, several European countries and the European Union have expressed strong support for Denmark and Greenland, rejecting any notion that the island's future could be dictated by external powers and underscoring the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
