Tehran: Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, as announced by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei. This development was reported by Anadolu Ajansi (AA) through the state news agency.
According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, the visit by Munir and the accompanying delegation aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and build upon Pakistan's efforts to strengthen peace and security in the region. Baqaei mentioned in remarks carried by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that Munir will engage in discussions with senior Iranian officials during his trip.
Pakistan has played a significant role as a mediator between Iran and the United States throughout their ongoing conflict, maintaining close contact with both nations. The US and Iran had signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 and initiated negotiations towards a final agreement. However, these talks encountered obstacles due to disagreements on security guarantees and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies and trade.
Between July 8 and July 24, tensions escalated as the US and Iran exchanged military strikes. The US launched attacks on targets inside Iran, and Tehran retaliated by striking US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
