Prime Minister Advocates for Faster Expansion at Aqaba Ports

Aqaba:Prime Minister Jafar Hassan called for expediting the expansion and modernization projects at the ports in Aqaba. His aim is to enhance handling capacity, bolster supply chains, and solidify Aqaba's status as a key regional trade and logistics hub.

According to Jordan News Agency, during an inspection tour at the Aqaba Company for Ports Operations and Management, Hassan emphasized the urgency of advancing development projects. He pointed out the strategic importance of Aqaba as a regional gateway for multiple Arab nations despite current challenges.

Hassan commended the efforts of port staff and urged them to sustain their operational pace to accommodate the growing activity. He highlighted recent government initiatives, which have improved port operations and increased efficiency in cargo handling, customs clearance, and storage capacity.

The prime minister also underscored the significance of the Aqaba-Shidiya-Ma'an railway project. He noted that the development of port infrastructure and logistics services needs to progress alongside this railway to boost freight transport and transit trade.

The Aqaba-Ma'an dry port was mentioned as a strategic government priority, with plans for its implementation underway. Complementary to the ongoing port expansions, Hassan cited a natural gas supply project that will reduce energy costs for local industries and support exports.

Port safety was another focal point, with Hassan calling for adherence to safety standards to enhance Aqaba's competitiveness. A new public safety regulation has been proposed to reinforce these efforts.

Hussein Safadi, CEO of Aqaba Development Corporation, reported significant increases in cargo handling volumes across various terminals in 2026. Notable increases were observed at the new Aqaba port, oil terminal, and passenger terminal, among others.

In response to rising vehicle traffic, storage capacity has been expanded, and additional measures implemented to improve cargo operations. Safadi also detailed expansion projects at the oil terminal, including a new tender for constructing an additional oil berth to sustain petroleum supplies.

Meanwhile, the South Aqaba Investment Complex reached full capacity, with discussions underway for further expansion to support logistics and industrial activities. Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Chief Commissioner Shadi Majali confirmed Aqaba's readiness to accommodate new economic activities, with public safety enhancements already in motion.
