PSD Launches ‘Safe Winter 2026’ Campaign to Mitigate Weather-Related Hazards

Accra:The Public Security Directorate (PSD) has initiated its "Safe Winter 2026" campaign, emphasizing the need for public vigilance against heating-related incidents, flash floods, and road hazards as authorities gear up for the winter season.

According to Jordan News Agency, the campaign aims to enhance public awareness and emergency preparedness. The PSD has activated preventive and operational plans, deploying personnel and equipment while enhancing coordination with government agencies to ensure a swift response to weather-related emergencies.

The directorate has stated that its security and emergency response units will remain on high alert to manage incidents and maintain security and humanitarian services around the clock. It has warned against the improper use of heating appliances, urging residents to ensure their safety, provide adequate ventilation, and avoid leaving heaters on while sleeping or refueling them during operation to prevent suffocation and fires.

Additionally, the PSD has advised residents to avoid approaching or crossing valleys, waterways, and flooded areas, even when water levels seem low. Those living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to monitor official weather forecasts and warnings.

Motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, adhere to speed limits, and maintain safe distances, especially during rainfall when visibility is reduced, and roads become slippery. Drivers are also advised to avoid flooded roads and follow instructions from security personnel.

Residents in caravans and mobile homes in remote or exposed areas should secure their accommodations against strong winds, stay away from valleys and flood-prone areas, and move to safer locations when severe weather looms.

The PSD has stressed the importance of public cooperation and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent winter-related accidents, encouraging residents to promptly report hazards and emergencies. The directorate has reaffirmed its readiness to respond to emergencies throughout the winter and reminded the public that assistance is available through the unified emergency number, 911.
