HRH Prince Mired bin Ra’ad met CEO of Airport International Group (AIG) Nicolas Claude on Sunday to discuss expanding collaboration to make the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) fully accessible to people with disabilities.
Prince Mired, who is the President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, emphasized the need for a concerted effort to ensure the airport is fully accessible, noting that the understanding and observance of each stakeholder’s commitments is the cornerstone and first step required to make Jordan a regional and international model for empowering people with disabilities.
Incorporating accessibility into national building codes is an accomplishment that demonstrates a strong commitment to pursuing best practices and granting the disabled access to all services, he said.
The two parties agreed to train cadres in all airport facilities (security, customs, handling companies, and others) on the protocol and mechanisms for effective communication with people with disabilities.
The meeting is part of a series of visits by the council to the AIG to monitor the implementation of recommendations made by a specialized team in this regard.
Early in 2019, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities launched a ten-year national plan to correct the conditions of existing buildings and public facilities in order to create an environment free of physical barriers that allows people with disabilities to access various facilities and services independently, in privacy, and on an equal footing with others.
