Some 26 impoverished families in the governorates of Karak and Madaba on Saturday were handed the keys of their new homes under the Royal Initiative for housing.

The initiative was launched in 2005 to secure decent housing and a stable life for underprivileged families across the Kingdom in implementation of His Majesty King Abdullah’s pledges during his meetings with dignitaries and public figures from the various governorates.

Each of the homes includes 2 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and a fenced outdoor courtyard with basic services, such as water, electricity and infrastructure.

Royal Court Chief Yousef Issawi, head of the committee to follow-up on the implementation of the royal initiatives, handed the keys to 10 homes to beneficiary families in the Ghor Al-Sammar area and 5 in Ghor Haditha in the Karak Government during a ceremony attended by Ministers of Public Works and Housing Yahya Kasbi, and Social Development, Ayman Mufleh.

Another poverty-stricken family in Karak also received the key to their new home upon an order by the King, who is keen on improving the quality of life and launching service and income-generating projects to secure jobs for the local communities.

In Madaba Governorate, Issawi handed over the keys to 11 new homes as part of the Royal Initiative under which beneficiary families are selected based on field surveys and transparent and fair criteria set by the Ministry of Social Development, taking into account the economic, social and health status of the family and members, people with disabilities and the “unhealthy nature” of their homes.

Issawi told Petra in an interview that that top priority of His Majesty is raising the standard of living of citizens, solving the problems they face, providing aid for underprivileged families and humanitarian cases, and security basic needs, such as housing, particularly people in areas with crushing poverty.

He said the families benefiting from the housing initiative were going through harsh social and economic conditions and living in old and dilapidated homes, and that the new houses will provide a healthy environment and a decent life. He said the Royal Court administration that follows up on implementation of the initiative oversees the equipment of the new homes and the provision of basic services in cooperation with government agencies.

In press interviews, beneficiary families expressed their deep appreciation for “this generous royal gesture, which reflects the King’s care and interest in securing a decent life for citizens, and the continuation of the Royal Initiatives despite the tough conditions due to the Covid pandemic.”
