Baghdad: Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi on Saturday reiterated Jordan’s full support of Iraq in its efforts to stabilize the country and achieve national interests.

Addressing the 34th Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union conference in Baghdad, Safadi said His Majesty King Abdullah has repeatedly called on the international community and influential powers to stand by Iraq, and that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II advocated for that cause at a recent Arab summit in Algeria.

The stability and security of Iraq is a key pillar of regional security and stability, he stressed, adding that “we are duty bound to support the brothers in order to return to exercise their key role within the Arab fold”.

Jordan, he pledged, will remain with the Iraqi people and all its political, ethnic and religious components, “whose diversity is a point of strength as long as everyone places the Iraqi interest ahead of other narrow interests”.

“We stress that the security of Iraq and the Arab Gulf region is an integral part of our Arab national security”, he said, adding that Jordan also stands by Egypt’s and Sudan’s rights regarding the Al Nahda Dam, and also supports all efforts to achieve the unity and stability of Yemen and Libya.

On the Palestinian issue, Safadi said Jordan stands by the Palestinian people and their steadfastness, as well as the Kingdom’s defense of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

He called for an Arab parliamentary stance against Israel’s repressive measures against the Palestinian people, ongoing settlement expansion, confiscation of land and violation of holy shrines, stressing that Islamic and international parliaments must be addressed to expose the occupation authority’s designs in various forums.

Safadi also urged aid and relief to be stepped up to earthquake-hit Syria, calling for the country’s return to take its effective role in Arab decision-making and various pan-Arab institutions.
