Amman: The Senate's Palestine Committee convened on Monday to address the Palestinian issue and the conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories with Russian Ambassador to Jordan Gleb F. Desyatnikov. The committee emphasized the need for increased international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
According to Jordan News Agency, Committee Chairman Mazen Darwazah highlighted the longstanding relations between Jordan and Russia, rooted in mutual respect and constructive cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1963. He noted the close relationship between King Abdullah II of Jordan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has facilitated enhanced dialogue and coordination on both regional and international issues.
Darwazah pointed out the inauguration of the Russian Pilgrims House at the Baptism Site by President Putin as a testament to the deep ties between the two nations. He also emphasized Jordan's commitment to safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites under the historic Hashemite Custodianship.
The chairman stressed Moscow's role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the importance of major powers upholding international legitimacy and law amidst global challenges. Addressing the Palestinian issue, Darwazah warned of the critical situation due to Israeli government policies, including settlement expansion, land grabs, and home demolitions in the occupied West Bank, which compromise peace prospects and a two-state solution.
He cautioned against altering the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and undermining the Jerusalem Awqaf Department's role and the Hashemite Custodianship over holy sites. Darwazah also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, citing hostilities, aid restrictions, and deteriorating living conditions.
Darwazah called for a more effective international role, particularly from Russia, to uphold international legitimacy, stop unilateral measures, and support a comprehensive political process toward settlement.
Russian Ambassador Desyatnikov reiterated Russia's commitment to closely monitoring developments in Palestinian territories and the region. He affirmed that Jordan and Russia share similar views on the Palestinian issue and Middle East affairs, advocating for a just and comprehensive political settlement based on UN resolutions and international legitimacy. Desyatnikov emphasized that diplomatic solutions are essential for ending the conflict, reducing tensions, and promoting regional stability.
