Amman: The Sri Lanka Embassy in Amman on Friday oeganized an awareness program in support of anti-human trafficking efforts and safe global migration.

The program is to educate Sri Lankan nationals on human trafficking, its consequences, related laws and punishment, recently updated government policies and supporting the country’s efforts to crack down on human trafficking, the embassy said in a statement.

Referring to the long-standing friendly relations between Jordan and Sri Lanka, Ambassador-designate Priyangika Wijegunasekara, in opening remarks, thanked the government and people of the Kingdom for helping Sri Lankans and providing more employment opportunities and a safe working environment in the Kingdom.

She highlighted the importance of developing more connectivity between the two countries to promote legal migration and combat human trafficking, which, she said, is a global organized crime.

A representative from Caritas in Amman tackled human trafficking and ways of identifying potential traffickers and addressing their motives.

Third Secretary Abedheera Rupasinghe highlighted the importance of legal migration, and Consular Officer Harshana Liyanage spoke about anti-human trafficking efforts in Sri Lanka.
