Two Police Officers Injured in Armed Encounter South of Amman

Amman: A Public Security Directorate (PSD) patrol encountered a violent clash on Saturday with armed individuals, resulting in injuries to two police officers. The incident unfolded when the officers attempted to inspect a suspicious vehicle without license plates, prompting the occupants to open fire, according to a statement by the department's media spokesman.

According to Jordan News Agency, the confrontation occurred during a routine patrol by a criminal investigation police unit south of the capital, Amman. The officers noticed the unlicensed vehicle and approached it for inspection. However, the occupants fired at the officers, injuring a first lieutenant before fleeing into a nearby residential area.

The pursuit of the suspects led to the involvement of additional security reinforcements. Two of the three suspects were apprehended, while the third managed to escape temporarily. His location was eventually identified, and during a subsequent raid, he again opened fire on the police, injuring a second lieutenant before being injured and arrested himself.

The injured officers and the suspect were all transferred to a hospital for medical treatment. Authorities seized three firearms during the operation. Further investigations revealed that the three suspects had criminal records, including charges related to drug offenses, theft, and possession of weapons. The vehicle involved in the incident had been taken from a citizen who had refused to return it. The investigation into the incident continues.
