Kyiv: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Maliuk announced his resignation on Monday, aligning with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent declaration of a 'substantial' reshuffle within the defense sector. Maliuk expressed his intent to continue contributing to the service by spearheading 'world-class asymmetric special operations' aimed at inflicting significant damage on Russia.
According to Anadolu Agency - English, Maliuk conveyed through a statement on Telegram that he believes a robust and modern special service is crucial for Ukraine's security. He expressed gratitude to President Zelenskyy for the changes being implemented in the defense sector. Zelenskyy, in a separate post on the social media platform X, acknowledged Maliuk's contributions and encouraged him to specialize in combat services, particularly in conducting asymmetric operations against Russia.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for effective asymmetric operations and achieving tangible results in countering adversaries, highlighting Maliuk's expertise in this domain. The President assured that Maliuk would continue to focus on these operations within the SBU. He confirmed having discussed potential successors for Maliuk's role, ultimately signing a decree appointing Yevhenii Khmara, leader of the SBU's Alpha special operations unit, as the acting chief.
The reshuffle is part of Zelenskyy's broader strategy to enhance Ukraine's defense resilience. Maliuk, who took over as SBU chief in 2023, has overseen several key operations, including attacks on Russian military airfields and strategic bombers in the previous year.
