New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Friday called on governments and societies to recommit to eradicating slavery, urging countries to protect and uphold the rights of slavery victims and survivors.

In a message marking the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, Guterres said, “We must recognise that the legacy of the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans reverberates to this day, and its scars continue to scar our societies and impede equitable development.”

He called for the elimination of contemporary forms of slavery, including trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, child labour, forced marriage and the use of children in armed conflicts.”
