UN chief congratulates Iraq’s Kurdistan for holding elections

United Nations Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres has congratulated the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for holding parliamentary elections on October 20, which took place in a calm and peaceful manner. In a statement issued on his behalf on Tuesday, Guterres lauded efforts of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), with the support of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in the preparation and conduct of the elections. As the Kurdistan Region of Iraq awaits the final results, Guterres encouraged politicians and segments of society to continue to maintain a peaceful atmosphere. He urged political actors to resolve any electoral disputes through existing legal channels and "form an inclusive government as soon as possible."
