Amman: The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will cost more than $70 billion and could take several decades. The UN agency highlighted the extensive damage caused by ongoing conflict and restrictions, which have severely impacted essential services such as food, shelter, and health care, pushing Gaza into a dire situation.
According to Jordan News Agency, the report emphasized that the Israeli occupation's military actions have led to an unprecedented downturn in the Palestinian economy, with Gaza being particularly affected. The region's economy saw a dramatic contraction of 87 percent, resulting in a per capita GDP plummeting to $161, marking it as the lowest globally.
The agency also pointed out that the persistent and systematic destruction raises serious concerns about Gaza's potential to recover and function as a sustainable community. The scale of the damage and the prolonged timeline for reconstruction efforts pose significant challenges to restoring normalcy in the region.
