Washington: The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday evening that the United States intends to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change for the second time, rejecting international efforts to combat global warming.
According to Jordan News Agency, the White House stated in a statement, shortly after Trump took the oath of office, that "President Trump will withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement."
The United States had previously withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement during Trump's first term, before rejoining it under President Joe Biden. The withdrawal will take effect one year after the official announcement.
The climate agreement, which was adopted nearly 10 years ago in Paris, has been signed by nearly every country. Its goal is to limit global warming to "below two degrees Celsius" compared to pre-industrial levels, and to continue efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.
Under the agreement, the United States pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by between 61 and 66 percent by 2035, compared to 2005 levels, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.
