Universal Accessibility Highlighted at Amman Design Week Panel

Amman:A panel discussion held at Darat Abu Adnan during Amman Design Week stressed the importance of universal accessibility for persons with disabilities. The panel called for architectural standards that ensure independent and safe mobility in public spaces.

According to Jordan News Agency, the session was led by Dana Qabbani, a disability inclusion advocate, alongside experts in accessibility and architecture. They focused on the need to incorporate universal design criteria from the start of planning and construction projects, rather than making changes after the fact.

The panelists emphasized that accessibility involves more than just ramps and elevators; it requires a comprehensive approach to creating a built environment that serves not only persons with disabilities but also the elderly and those with temporary mobility challenges.

The discussion also addressed operational challenges such as inconsistent compliance with national accessibility codes, limited awareness among design and engineering professionals, and the necessity for better cross-sector coordination to enforce accessibility in urban development.

Participants concluded that universal design is essential for inclusive and resilient urban planning, ensuring equal access to infrastructure and services.
