Water Minister inaugurates new Tafileh purification plant

Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Najjar on Monday inaugurated the new Tafileh purification plant, which became operational after expansion and rehabilitation of its facilities.

The minister, accompanied by US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Sherry Carlin, had a first-hand look at the station’s facilities, calling it a “qualitative addition” to the sewage service in the various areas of Tafileh that also helps improve the local environment.

He expressed the government’s appreciation of support of Jordan by the US government and other friendly and Arab countries to help the Kingdom address the exceptional and emergency circumstances, especially those posed to the water sector.

For her part, Carlin praised the efforts of water staff in dealing with various challenges, pledging her country’s continued support of Jordan to find solutions to water problems.

The Tafileh station was established in 1989 with a daily capacity of 1,600 million cubic meters, which was raised to 5,000 million cubic meters per day, and the plant was reconstructed, modernized and upgraded to serve more than 70,000 inhabitants in most areas of the governorate, 180 kilometers southwest of Amman, until the year 2035.

Its capacity can be increased in the future to 7,500 cubic meters per day to accommodate rising demand, where wastewater is treated according to highest international standards that increased the quantities of water used for irrigating restricted crops.
