Gaza: The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated the cost of rebuilding the health sector in Gaza at more than $7 billion. WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, stated at a press conference that the reconstruction plan includes humanitarian response, early recovery, and long-term needs. She highlighted the necessity of such an investment for the peace and stability that health can bring.
According to Jordan News Agency, Balkhy emphasized the importance of transitioning swiftly from crisis response to recovery once the fighting ceases. Rebuilding Gaza's health system would not only save lives today but also restore dignity, stability, and hope for the future. The initial focus would be on restoring hospital operations while addressing hunger and malnutrition simultaneously.
Balkhy cautioned that the efforts are already behind schedule, noting reports from Palestinian health authorities that 455 deaths have occurred since January, including 151 children, most under the age of five, due to malnutrition. She added that the WHO has maintained its presence in Gaza throughout the conflict, acting as the main provider of medicines and medical supplies, and supporting over 22 million treatments and surgeries.
