Doha:Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council has announced the appointment of new governors for al-Bayda and al-Jawf, two provinces that remain partially under the control of Houthi forces.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the government decrees were issued on Sunday, naming Major General Hussein al-Ajji Ali al-Awadhi as the governor of al-Bayda and Major General Amin Ali al-Akimi as the governor of al-Jawf, who will also serve as the commander of its military axis.
Al-Awadhi replaces Nasser al-Sawadi in al-Bayda, while al-Akimi takes over from al-Awadhi in al-Jawf. These appointments come amid ongoing military conflicts between government forces and the Houthis, who maintain control over strategic areas within these provinces.
Al-Bayda is strategically important due to its central position in Yemen, bordering eight other provinces. Meanwhile, al-Jawf holds military and geographic significance as it borders Saudi Arabia and several Houthi-controlled provinces.
The Yemeni government launched Operation 'Dawn of Yemen' on October 5, aiming to reclaim control from the Houthis and restore state institutions. This escalation follows renewed conflict since July, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since the Houthis seized control of Sanaa in September 2014, leading to a Saudi-led coalition intervention in 2015 in support of the recognized government.
