Amman:Zara-Ma'in Water Supply System project has been honored with an award from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) in the small-to-medium project category, announced Water Minister Raed Abu Soud.
According to Jordan News Agency, this accolade marks the first time a Jordanian project has been recognized in this particular category, highlighting the successful rehabilitation of the Zara-Ma'in water supply system.
Minister Abu Soud described the award as a national achievement, reflecting Jordan's leadership in water-project management. This success was achieved under the guidance of King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein, aligning with the government's economic modernization plan and the National Water Strategy 2023-2040.
The project serves as a testament to Jordan's development of a "model institutional" framework in the water sector, adhering to international best practices. This recognition enhances Jordan's standing in regional and global integrated water management.
The Zara station, a key part of the system, supplies approximately 38 million cubic meters of water annually to central Jordan, benefiting around 1.7 million people. With support from the U.S. government, the ministry replaced pumps and upgraded the station to meet international standards, reducing both energy and operational costs and increasing resilience to climate change.
The rehabilitation aimed to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the system amid limited water resources and increasing demand. Efforts focused on upgrading facilities, improving operations and maintenance, and implementing sustainable solutions to fortify the infrastructure against climate impacts.
Minister Abu Soud attributed the project's success to ongoing U.S. support, which has played a crucial role in advancing Jordan's transition toward a green economy and sustainable development, balancing water and energy security in the process.
