EU ratchet up sanctions against Belarus over refugee crisis

The EU Monday announced a new tranche of sanctions against Belarus in response to the refugee crisis on the Belarus-Poland borders, according to the BBC.

The UK national broadcaster reported that EU officials have said the sanctions will target individuals implicated with the smuggling of immigrants through Belarus.

The EU is accusing Minsk of pushing refugees to the country’s eastern borders to “undermine security” there, accusations that Minsk have denied.

Under royal directives, injured young man from Irbid evacuated to KHMC

Under royal directives, a Medical evacuation airplane transported, Hamza Qura’an, from the King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) in Irbid, northern Jordan, to the King Hussein Medical Center (KHMC) in Amman, in order to receive the necessary medical and health care, after he sustained serious injuries due to an explosion of a bag of antique copper in a hardware store where he works in the city of Irbid.

Hamza is a young university student, married with two children, who works in his father’s shops in the haberdashery, scrap and metal trade. He sustained multiple injuries and fractures due to shrapnel that exploded inside the shop. He was treated at Princess Basma Hospital in Irbid and provided with the necessary first aid before he was transferred to KAUH.

Irbid governor, Radwan Otoum, who accompanied by senior security officials visited Qura’an at KAUH, said he is receiving the necessary medical care.

KAUH director, Muhammad Ghazo, said that the young man’s health condition didn’t allow him to be transferred, and when his condition stabilized, he was transferred to the the King Hussein Medical Center.

Participation in national olive festival ‘free of charge’: official

The National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) Monday said they will not charge fees for participation in the 21st National Olive Festival that will see the participation of 500 enterprises.

Director-General of the NARC Nizar Haddad said the Centre made the decision not to charge fees to encourage participation, adding the number of applications with the NARC official platform “exceeded all expectations.”

Haddad emphasised that to ensure justice and equality, the Centre left it to the discretion of Agriculture Ministry directorate heads to shortlist and filter the applications based on a of set criteria that give priority to olive and rural products.

He said the number of “production kitchens” will be limited to ensure social distancing, as shortlisting will be done according to a merit-based filtering system by the Agriculture ministry directorates.

UK reports 47 COVID fatalities

The UK’s health department Monday reported 47 COVID-19 deaths, taking the death toll to 142,945.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said some 39,700 people tested positive for the highly contagious lung disease, as the caseload bears 10 million.

Global COVID-19 caseload tops 253mn

The total number of global COVID-19 cases has surged to 253.3 million, as of Monday, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

The University, in its latest update, revealed that the current global death toll has reached about 5.1 million. The United States accounted for the world’s highest number of cases followed by India then Brazil.

COVID kills 17 in Jordan, positive tests at 7.2 percent

COVID-19 killed 17 in Jordan in the last 24 hours, as the death toll stands at 11,255 and some of 3,441 cases were recorded, pushing the caseload to 895,564, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The MoH said in a press statement Monday that 7.26 percent of the 47,391 tests conducted today came back positive.

It said 86 people had recovered and were discharged from hospitals while 126 others were admitted, as the total number of COVID-19 patients receiving medical treatment in hospitals hit 735.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Kingdom hovers around 30,903, it added.

Some 853,406 COVID-19 patients, including patients who had been self-isolating, have fully recovered so far.

Gaza: 6 COVID-19 deaths, 146 cases recorded

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip on Monday announced that 6 new COVID-19 fatalities and 146 new cases were recorded during the last 24 hours.

In a daily brief on COVID-19 in the coastal enclave, the ministry said that a total of 100 coronavirus patients have recovered over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, it said that the caseload reached 185,837, while the death toll hit 1,622. A total of 182,002 patients have recovered so far.

The report said 70 cases needed hospitalization and that 48 were serious or critical.

6 civil servants convicted of corruption, handed prison terms

The Amman Court of First Instance Monday convicted six civil service employees of corruption and harming the state’s interests, and handed them prison terms ranging from three years and nine months to one month, as well as a fine of JD3,000 to three of them.

The court’s Judicial Commission on corruption crimes issued its verdicts in a public session, including condemning a former government employee and another two employees of abuse of public office and forgery.

Asian football confederation confirms Iranian women team goalie female

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Monday said Iran’s national football women team goalie who had played against Jordan’s is a female, following an investigation at Jordan’s behest on the goalie’s sex.

The Jordan Football Association had lodged an official request with the AFC to launch an investigation on the sex of the Iranian goalie after her team had beaten Jordan’s national team in the Asian women football playoff.
