Amman: Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, welcomed the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, to Jordan in a meeting that underscores the robust partnership between the two entities. This visit marks the third time the FAO head has visited Jordan recently, highlighting the strong ties between the FAO and the Kingdom.
According to Jordan News Agency, Minister Hneifat emphasized the historic collaboration that has led to impactful projects, particularly in enhancing food security and establishing the Regional Observatory for Food Security. The minister acknowledged FAO's initiatives to empower women and youth in Jordan's agricultural sector and its support for Syrian refugees, which contributes to regional stability through sustainable agricultural development.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu praised King Abdullah II for his efforts in fostering political stability in Jordan and the region, and his ongoing support for the agricultural sector. He announced the FAO's decision to award the AGRICO Medal to King Abdullah II, a prestigious honor recognizing leaders who have significantly contributed to global food security and poverty alleviation. Notably, this medal has not been awarded to any leader in the past 15 years.
Looking ahead, Qu Dongyu revealed plans to establish a regional training center in Jordan focusing on smart agriculture techniques. This hub aims to integrate artificial intelligence and modern technology to optimize agricultural resources, including water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
In addition, Mohammed Hiyari, the ministry's Secretary-General, highlighted the need for a rapid response plan to address declining rainfall due to climate change. He emphasized the urgency of launching programs to transform food systems and combat transboundary animal diseases.
