President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has welcomed the commitment of the UN Secretary General to proceed with the appointment of a personality that would explore the prospects of resuming the Cyprus talks, saying that there will soon be an announcement by the UN Secretary General.
Replying to questions, on the sidelines of a visit in Limassol, about the prospect of an appointment of an UN envoy, the President said that he recently had the opportunity to discuss the matter with the UN Secretary General and the Assistant Secretary General during the Peace Summit that was held on Saturday in Cairo.
"We discussed about this prospect. I welcome the commitment of the UN Secretary General to proceed with the appointment of a personality and soon there will be announcements," he stressed.
Noting that what the UNSG told him was very specific, he said that he can not give any details.
Asked whether it will be an envoy or a special envoy, he said it will be a UN envoy who will explore the prospect of resuming the Cyprus talks.
"This is what we are asking for, it is positive that the United Nations sees this need. Let the UN Secretary-General proceed with his announcements," President Christodoulides concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
