Amman: In the age of digital information, fake accounts have become a powerful tool for spreading misinformation, fueling division, and undermining public trust. As these deceptive profiles multiply across social media platforms, experts warn of their far-reaching impact on society and call for urgent action to counter their influence. According to Jordan News Agency, fake accounts, often created with fabricated identities or automated systems, have turned social media into a double-edged sword. While these platforms serve as spaces for free expression and connectivity, they have also become breeding grounds for false narratives and online manipulation. Cybersecurity expert Ahmad Al-Omari explained that the sophistication of these accounts has grown with advancements in artificial intelligence, making them harder to detect. "These accounts are not just bots posting random content. They analyze user data, target specific audiences, and shape opinions by spreading misleading information," he said. Legal expe rt Mohammad Al-Naji described social media as a modern-day battlefield for information warfare. "Fake accounts are used to influence public perception, disrupt communities, and even sway political discourse," he said, stressing the need for stronger digital regulations and public awareness. Beyond misinformation, fake accounts pose a direct threat to societal stability. Eng. Sahel Ubaidat, a cybersecurity specialist, highlighted their role in online fraud, hate speech, and even inciting real-world unrest. "These accounts create an illusion of mass support or opposition, manipulating emotions and deepening societal divisions," he noted. Experts warned that the unchecked spread of fake accounts erodes trust in institutions, making it harder for people to distinguish between credible news and propaganda. The result is a digital landscape where truth competes with well-orchestrated deception. To combat this growing threat, experts emphasize the need for a multi-layered approach. Strengthening verification meas ures can help ensure authenticity and limit the spread of fake accounts. Enforcing stricter laws against identity fraud and digital deception is also essential in holding perpetrators accountable. Additionally, public awareness campaigns play a crucial role in educating users on how to identify misinformation and verify sources, reducing the impact of fake content. Collaboration with social media platforms is equally important, as enhanced monitoring and the removal of suspicious accounts can curb their influence before they cause harm. Minister of Interior Mazen Al-Faraya recently revealed that the Cybercrime Unit dealt with over 24,000 complaints last year and more than 5,000 cases this year. Many involved hate speech and incitement on social media, with legal action taken against perpetrators. Under current laws, those found guilty of spreading false information or inciting unrest through fake accounts face up to three years in prison, fines of JD 20,000, or both. The Public Security Directorate confirm ed ongoing efforts to track and dismantle fake accounts, reiterating that individuals engaging in digital deception will face legal consequences. As the battle against misinformation intensifies, experts stress that vigilance, education, and responsible digital practices are the key weapons in restoring trust in the online world.
