Amman: The Lower House Legal Committee, led by MP Mustafa Al-Amawi, convened with a delegation of current and former assistant judges from Germany's Federal Constitutional Court to deliberate on enhancing collaboration and exchanging expertise in legislative and judicial domains.
According to Jordan News Agency, Al-Amawi emphasized Jordan's extensive constitutional and parliamentary heritage, starting with the Basic Law of 1921, the inaugural legislative elections in 1929, and the 1952 Constitution. These frameworks established the principle of separation of powers and assigned a pivotal legislative role to Parliament through the Senate and the House of Representatives. He highlighted significant parliamentary developments that reinforced pluralism and legislative reform, designating Parliament as a fundamental pillar of Jordan's democratic journey. Additionally, Al-Amawi detailed the parliamentary protocols for drafting and approving legislation, underscoring the committees' involvement in evaluating bills and engaging with government bodies and civil society before presenting them for a vote.
Al-Amawi further noted the critical political reforms under His Majesty King Abdullah II, such as the implementation of the Elections Law and Political Parties Law, which are foundational to bolstering party life and consolidating parliamentary democracy. He emphasized reforms that have enhanced the participation of women and youth in political life and decision-making, resulting in increased female representation in parliamentary blocs. He also highlighted the lower house's commitment to dialogue with civil society and the media to foster transparency and participation.
He reaffirmed the robust relations between Jordan and Germany, commending Germany's support amid regional instability and the challenges of hosting refugees. He acknowledged that international aid has not fully matched Jordan's efforts in this regard.
MPs Abdel Halim Al-Ananbeh, Ayman Al-Baddadweh, and Malek Al-Tahrawi lauded Germany's supportive role concerning the refugee crisis and stressed the significance of strengthening cooperation, particularly in the exchange of legislative and judicial expertise.
The German delegation expressed appreciation for Jordan's legislative reforms and its commitment to upholding the rule of law. They also commended Jordan's political and humanitarian contributions to the region despite facing economic, political, and security challenges, and affirmed their dedication to deepening cooperation and partnership with Jordan.
