Gaza City: The Israeli army released eight Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, including a woman and child, after months of detention, a rights group said on Wednesday. The freed individuals were transported by Red Cross vehicles to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah for medical checkups. Witnesses reported visible signs of fatigue and exhaustion on the released detainees.
According to Anadolu Agency, the only available data provided by the Israeli authorities indicates that around 1,846 Palestinians from Gaza have been arrested and held in Israeli prisons and military camps since October 2023. Palestinian rights groups estimate that over 10,100 Palestinians are currently held by Israel, including 45 women and over 400 children.
The Israeli army has continued its offensive against Gaza since October 2023, resulting in the deaths of more than 54,600 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, the offensive has persisted.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions against civilians in the enclave.
