Israeli Airstrikes in Yemen Raise Fears of Humanitarian Crisis

Sana'a: Israeli airstrikes on Yemen's key civilian infrastructure have heightened concerns over a potential humanitarian crisis, as reported by international medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

According to Anadolu Agency, Yemen's Health Ministry confirmed that at least seven individuals were killed and 97 others were injured in the strikes on Hodeida port on May 5 and Sana'a airport on May 6. These attacks have led to significant damage to civilian infrastructure in a country already suffering from years of conflict and instability.

MSF issued a statement highlighting the severe impact on civilians, stating that they would bear the brunt of the violence. Dennis Habaasa, MSF's head of mission in Yemen, emphasized that the escalation could severely disrupt the supply of essential goods and access to healthcare, particularly affecting the northern regions of Yemen.

"There is a threat of a humanitarian disaster in Yemen, especially in the north of the country, due to the disruption of critical supplies and a lack of access to healthcare," Habaasa said. The destruction of vital infrastructure such as Sana'a airport and Hodeida port, crucial for the entry of humanitarian aid, poses a significant challenge for organizations like MSF trying to deliver aid.

MSF has urged for the protection of civilians and infrastructure, calling for an unhindered flow of food, fuel, medicine, and other essential supplies into Yemen to mitigate the impact of the ongoing conflict. Millions in Yemen remain in dire need of assistance, as the prolonged conflict continues to exacerbate the country's humanitarian situation.
