Amman: Nizar Mahidat, Director General of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA), emphasized the urgent need to support the national industry in localizing similar biological medicines, especially in light of the rising global expenditure on these treatments. He stated that enhancing local production is the key to achieving substantial savings in healthcare costs. Mahidat made these remarks during his patronage of the scientific day activities marking the fifth edition of World Biosimilars Week, under the theme "Facilitating Access to Similar Biological Medicines," held at the JFDA headquarters on Monday. According to Jordan News Agency, Mahidat noted that a national committee had been established to advance the national pharmaceutical industry, with plans focused on accelerating the production of similar biological medicines and expediting the approval of production lines. He also highlighted the promising national achievements in the treatment of diseases, such as the successful cancer treatment tr ials carried out by the Royal Medical Services. Mahidat reaffirmed the JFDA's commitment to supporting the pharmaceutical sector by facilitating the registration of these medicines, aiming to improve drug security, boost national exports, and reduce medical expenses. He urged participants to leverage the meeting's outcomes to positively impact the national pharmaceutical industry, a vital contributor to Jordan's economy. The event featured a lecture by Colonel Dr. Rami Khasawneh, Director of the Military Oncology Center Laboratories, who discussed T-cell therapy technology. Dr. Hanan Saboul, Secretary-General of the Jordanian Pharmaceutical Association, provided insights on the World Biosimilars Week, while Dr. Zakia Kurdi, US Pharmacopoeia Communication Officer, spoke on the standards for biosimilars in the United States. Dr. Rana Malkawi, Director of the Drug Directorate, highlighted the JFDA's pioneering role in registering quality medicines, noting that the first similar biological medicine was registe red in 2012 in accordance with international standards. Dr. Ahlam Abdel Aziz, Head of the Biological Medicines Registration Department, shared the JFDA's experience with similar biological medicines, including the updated registration standards that align with global advancements. World Biologics Week, organized annually by the International Generics and Biosimilars Association (IGBA), runs from November 11 to 15 and aims to raise awareness about the importance of biosimilars and promote access to these vital medicines.
