AMMAN: The Jordan Cooperative Corporation has entered into a collaborative agreement with the International Labor Organization (ILO) to bolster the capacities of cooperative societies in Jordan. The agreement, signed on Thursday, focuses on employing ILO tools and training programs, while developing a comprehensive database and electronic services for the cooperative sector. According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement forms part of the second phase of the project "Improving the Prospects of Host Communities and Forcibly Displaced Persons in Jordan." This initiative, funded by the Netherlands, is implemented in partnership with ILO, UNICEF, UNHCR, the World Bank, and the International Finance Corporation. The collaboration aims to enhance the cooperative sector with targeted training and resources. Under the terms of the agreement, Director General of the Cooperative Corporation Abdel Fattah Shalabi and ILO Coordinator for Jordan Amal Mowafi have outlined plans for the Cooperative Corporation to adopt ILO 's tools and training materials, which will be tailored to suit the Jordanian context. These resources will be integrated into the corporation's annual training program, focusing on areas such as cooperative establishment, governance, promotion of decent work, elimination of child labor, and occupational safety in Jordan's agricultural sector. The training program, scheduled for the 2025-2027 period, will involve the ILO providing the Cooperative Corporation with necessary training materials, methodologies, and updates. Additionally, a software system for the database and electronic services will be developed, with efforts to train Corporation employees on utilizing this system effectively. Shalabi emphasized the agreement's role in supporting the cooperative sector by training members in cooperative establishment and improving governance and management. He also highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the Cooperative Corporation and ILO, which has previously led to significant advancements such as the national strategy for the Jordanian cooperative movement (2021-2025) and the establishment of the Cooperative Development Fund and Institute. Ruba Jaradat, ILO Regional Director for Arab States, stressed that the agreement's timing coincides with the United Nations' declaration of the International Year of Cooperatives, underlining the potential for enhanced skills among cooperative members, improved livelihoods, and the creation of an electronic database for the sector. Meanwhile, Dutch Ambassador to Jordan Harry Verweij underscored the agreement's importance within the PROSPECTS program, highlighting its role in improving the economic and social prospects of refugees and host communities in Jordan.
