Amman: Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman inaugurated the Environment and Climate Month activities on Monday at the Royal Academy for Nature Conservation in the Ajloun Forest Reserve. The event, organized by the Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the French Embassy in Amman and local and international partners, saw participation from several ambassadors.
According to Jordan News Agency, during the opening ceremony, Suleiman emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation to address climate change. He underscored the need for promoting awareness programs that encourage environmentally friendly practices in the waste, energy, water, and transportation sectors. Suleiman highlighted Jordan's efforts to align national policies with global environmental frameworks, including the Nationally Determined Policy Document and the National Committee for Climate Change.
Suleiman noted that Jordan has integrated climate action into its national policies through the National Climate Change Strategy 2022-2050, updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and preparations for the third version of the NDCs. He stressed that Environment and Climate Month serves as a national platform to promote green innovation, empower youth and women, and involve local communities in building resilience to climate impacts. Suleiman called for shared responsibility among the public and private sectors, civil society, and academia.
French Ambassador Franck Gillet remarked that the event brings together over 30 partners to organize more than 50 activities ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30). He noted France's commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement and its continued efforts following the UN Ocean Conference in Nice. Gillet also expressed gratitude to King Abdullah II for Jordan's historic role in protecting marine biodiversity.
UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan Sheri Ritsema Anderson highlighted that climate action is a matter of people, communities, and daily choices. She praised Jordan's commitment to environmental protection and resilience, expressing the UN's support for turning commitments into tangible results. On the sidelines of the launch, Suleiman and participants planted trees in the Ajloun Forest Reserve.
Environment and Climate Month aims to raise awareness, highlight national achievements in water management, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation, and strengthen international partnerships supporting the green economy transition.
