Jordan Partners with WFP to Offer Interest-Free Loans for Climate-Resilient Agriculture Projects

Amman: The Director General of the Agricultural Credit Corporation (ACC), Mohammad Dojan, announced a groundbreaking agreement between the ACC and the World Food Programme (WFP), recently approved by the Council of Ministers. This agreement marks a significant step forward in supporting both small and large farmers in Jordan as they face the challenges posed by climate change.

According to Jordan News Agency, Dojan emphasized that the primary objective of the agreement is to finance projects that integrate modern agricultural practices, contributing to Jordan's food security and the development of production chains. The agreement, valued at JD3.5 million, is designed to enhance the resilience of Jordanian farmers by promoting sustainable agricultural development and practices.

In a statement to "Petra" on Sunday, Dojan explained that the agreement focuses on water-smart and water-saving agricultural activities, as well as crops with high economic returns, such as saffron cultivation and packaging projects. The financing will cover two types of projects: individual businesses can receive loans of up to JD10,000, while medium-sized agricultural enterprises can access loans of up to JD70,000, all interest-free as the programme will cover the interest costs.

This initiative will target the governorates of Mafraq, Jerash, and Balqa, which are considered the most vulnerable and affected by climate change. Dojan highlighted that this cooperation aims to stimulate the use of smart agricultural technologies, alleviate financial burdens on farmers, ensure resource sustainability, enhance productivity and quality of local agricultural products, and address the consequences of climate change.
