Amman: Jordan's Food Security Council (FSC) has approved the Food Security Action Plan for 2025-2027, deciding to circulate the document to relevant parties for the implementation of its components. This decision was made during the FSC's first meeting in 2025, which was led by the Minister of Agriculture and Council Chairman, Khaled Hneifat.
According to Jordan News Agency, the FSC recommended an upgrade to its classification, proposing to become the "Higher Food Security Council" under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. This move is part of an effort to strengthen the council's strategic role. The council also endorsed the overall framework of its development matrix, incorporating food security indicators from the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) and Global Hunger Index reports.
To align with these new objectives, the FSC's Food Security Planning and Policies Committee has been assigned the task of preparing a detailed plan for the year 2025. The council was also updated on the latest advancements regarding the Food Security Information Management System and the project to establish a regional Food Security Observatory in Jordan, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The ministry statement noted that the FSC reviewed the most suitable model for setting up a regional center for emergency humanitarian response. This model was based on a concept note prepared by the World Food Programme (WFP) at the council's request. The FSC agreed to approach the WFP to start implementing the media plan for the "No Food Waste" campaign and approved a proposal for funding studies aimed at improving Jordan's standings on the Global Food Security Index and the National Food Security Strategy.
The initiative is designed to assist graduate students at Jordanian universities with financial support drawn from the FSC budget or external grants. In its upcoming meeting, the council plans to address a working paper on Jordan's poultry production and industry, along with the challenges these sectors are facing.
