Amman: His Majesty King Abdullah II, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have released a joint statement following the conclusion of the first Jordan-European Union Summit held at Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman.
According to Jordan News Agency, the summit marked a significant milestone in the relations between the European Union and Jordan, which were elevated to a Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership a year ago. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on various global issues, including long-term stability, peace, security, prosperity, and universal values such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. They also emphasized the importance of multilateralism and a rules-based international order, centered around the United Nations.
The joint statement welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 and President Trump's Comprehensive Plan to End the Conflict in Gaza. The leaders urged all parties involved to implement the resolution fully, adhering to internationally agreed political and legal principles. They called for a rapid and sustained distribution of humanitarian aid to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and stressed the importance of a Two-State solution for a just and lasting resolution of the Middle East conflict.
The European Union commended Jordan's efforts in hosting millions of refugees and reaffirmed its support to refugees and host communities in Jordan. The leaders expressed their support for Lebanon's stability and reiterated the importance of a Syrian-led transition for peace in Syria, free from foreign interference.
The statement also addressed the ongoing situation in Ukraine, reaffirming support for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity while calling for a comprehensive and lasting peace in line with international law.
The EU remains committed to supporting Jordan's economic resilience and reform agenda, announcing a support package worth EUR 3 billion. This package includes Macro-Financial Assistance, grants, and investments to bolster Jordan's economy.
The leaders agreed to explore opportunities to enhance trade and investment relations, with commitments to review and update the Association Agreement. They also stressed the importance of political modernization, human rights, and fundamental freedoms in fostering stability and sustainable development in Jordan.
The joint statement highlighted plans for continued cooperation in security and defense, energy transition, and digital connectivity. The leaders underscored the importance of Jordan's role in regional peace and stability and announced the next EU-Jordan Summit would take place in Brussels in 2028.
