Ministry Signs Water Security Agreements Worth Half a Million Jordanian Dinars

Amman: Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat signed a series of agreements on Tuesday aimed at boosting water security and improving the efficiency of water resource utilization, particularly in agricultural regions.

According to Jordan News Agency, the agreements target the governorates of Amman, Ajloun, Karak, Tafileh, Aqaba, and Ma'an, with a total value nearing half a million Jordanian dinars, fully financed by the Ministry of Agriculture's budget.

Hneifat stated that the initiative falls within the ministry's strategic plan to maximize the use of every drop of water, addressing the significant water challenges facing the Kingdom.

The projects include the construction of earth pits with a combined storage capacity of 600,000 cubic meters to collect rainwater and reduce water loss, the lining of several hundred meters of concrete irrigation canals to enhance water distribution efficiency, maintenance of existing water pits, and installation of filtration systems to improve water quality for agricultural use.

The minister noted that the Ministry has completed 40 earthworks this year and is proceeding with its annual target to construct 50 earthworks and dams, as part of its broader plan to reinforce water infrastructure in agricultural zones.

He also highlighted that these water development projects implemented in collaboration with local and international partners are vital for enhancing food security, supporting the national economy, and enabling farmers to expand production using sustainable and non-traditional water sources, particularly under growing pressure from climate change.
