Amman: The Director General of the Media Commission, Bashir Momani, announced the completion of a new regulatory system for digital media in Jordan. This initiative aims to create a digital media environment that aligns with rapid technological advancements.
According to Jordan News Agency, the proposed system will undergo several refinement stages. Initially, it will be presented to the Jordan Press Association, institutional partners, licensees, and experts in technology and digital media. Following this, the system will require Cabinet approval and be referred to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau for public comment.
The third phase involves a one-and-a-half-year monitoring and evaluation period post-publication in the Official Gazette. This phase is crucial for implementing and assessing the system to pinpoint necessary updates or improvements.
Momani emphasized the establishment of clear standards for professional digital media practices. The system will apply to licensed professional digital media entities, excluding personal social media content. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of license holders, digital service providers, and producers of professional digital media content.
The regulation will also provide a legal framework for the ethical use of AI, intellectual property rights, and issuance of official identification cards. It aims to protect the legal and financial rights of current license holders and support their presence in the digital media landscape.
Regarding licensing fees, the new system will introduce reduced fees for digital content creators in the radio and television sectors. These fees will be significantly lower than those under existing laws, with service fees remaining symbolic.
Momani highlighted the extensive efforts by Commission staff and partners over nearly a year of specialized meetings. He concluded by stating that Jordan will be among the first countries to implement such a comprehensive system, positioning it as a pioneering model for digital media regulation globally.
