Turkey calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza

Istanbul, Turkey called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, stressing that the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people will only lead to more acts of violence and instability in the region.

Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sedat Onal, said in a speech before the UN General Assembly at its emergency session: There is an urgent need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Onal pointed to the continuation of untold human suffering in Gaza during the past three weeks.

He added: "Millions of civilians are being bombed indiscriminately, deprived of water, food, electricity and fuel, and punished under a strict siege."

He stressed that "there cannot be any justification for indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, and that acts of collective punishment and attempts at forced displacement cannot be accepted and must be stopped."

He stressed the urgent need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, and to ensure uninterrupted access of humanitarian aid to the Strip.

Turkey's delegate to the United Nations said: "We must prevent this conflict from getting out of control and spreading to other regions."

He added: "Sustainable security cannot be achieved by targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, and there cannot be lasting peace in light of the continued suppression of Palestinian aspirations for freedom, dignity, and state building."

The Turkish delegate concluded by saying: “A comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through a peace process based on the two-state solution.”
