Algiers:Economic and Social Council (ESC) Secretary-General Nazir Awamleh attended an Arab symposium on Wednesday, focusing on using digitalization to integrate Arab nations into the global economy.
According to Jordan News Agency, Awamleh represented Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (UAESCSI) Deputy President Musa Shteiwi. He highlighted three strategic opportunities offered by digitalization creating a shared Arab digital market, enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to engage in global trade through e-commerce and digital payments, and preparing Arab youth for participation in the international remote labor market.
Awamleh identified several challenges hindering regional digital growth, such as structural digital divides leading to consumer-oriented digital activity, skill shortages, fragmented regulations on data governance and artificial intelligence (AI), and a significant reliance on imported technology.
To address these barriers, he suggested the establishment of a unified Arab digital economy charter, the development of shared digital infrastructure, the implementation of harmonized AI and data policies, and the creation of joint funding mechanisms to enhance digital inclusion for women, youth, and remote communities.
He also highlighted several initiatives in Jordan, including the ESC's Digital Policies Committee, the creation of an e-commerce customs center to expedite trade clearance, and the conduction of labor market studies focused on AI and Fourth Industrial Revolution readiness.
Awamleh called for cooperation among governments, the private sector, and civil society to form a cohesive Arab digital roadmap.
