Baghdad, -The Security Council discussed at dawn, today, Tuesday, at an Arab request, the escalation of the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip and the continuation of its aggression against civilians and the humanitarian sectors, and listened to UN officials about the current situation in the Middle East.
The Council listened to briefings from the United Nations and its agencies, which highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the needs and suffering of the population due to the bombing and aggression that led to their killing and displacement, and the demolition of the infrastructure of the Gaza Strip and the buildings belonging to humanitarian organizations.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said "The continuous bombing by the Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip is shocking, and that the level of destruction is unprecedented," stressing that "there is no safe place in Gaza."
He touched on the evacuation orders issued by the occupation forces to civilians to head south, and described what happened and is still happening as “forced displacement,” noting that the agency is the last remaining lifeline for the Palestinians in Gaza.
Lazzarini stated that he lost 64 of his fellow UNRWA workers in Gaza during the past three weeks, speaking about the depletion of fuel, water, food and medicine, and that the system used to allow relief into Gaza will fail if the political will is not available to make the flow of supplies feasible and proportionate to the unprecedented humanitarian needs. "
Lazzarini stressed the need to strictly comply with international humanitarian law, and ensure the safe and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and called for funding UNRWA to enable it to continue its humanitarian operations.
